Year 4/5

Welcome to Blwyddyn 4/5

Mr Canney

Welcome to our Year 4/5 class!

Our classroom is a vibrant and engaging space where curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning are at the heart of everything we do. We explore exciting topics through inquiry-based learning, with a strong focus on developing literacy, numeracy, and STEM skills.

Reading for pleasure is a big part of our class culture, and we love diving into high-quality books together. We also enjoy hands-on learning, from digital projects to outdoor exploration. Every child is encouraged to think critically, work collaboratively, and aim high in all they do.

Stay tuned to see our fantastic learning journey throughout the year!

Autumn Term - CSI

This autumn, our classroom transformed into a forensic investigation unit as we explored a CSI-themed learning journey. Pupils became detectives, using critical thinking and scientific methods to solve mysteries. We investigated fingerprints, coded secret messages, and analysed ‘crime scenes’ to develop problem-solving skills.

In literacy, we wrote detective reports and mystery stories, while in STEM, we explored the science behind forensic techniques. The theme sparked incredible engagement, with pupils applying their learning in exciting, real-world contexts. It was a term full of curiosity, collaboration, and creativity—setting the tone for another fantastic year of learning!

Spring Term - Project Antarctica

This term, our class embarked on an exciting journey to the coldest place on Earth with Project Antarctica! Through immersive, inquiry-based learning, pupils took on the role of Antarctic scientists, exploring the challenges of survival, extreme weather conditions, and the impact of climate change.

As part of our STEM investigations, we designed vehicles suited for Antarctic exploration, applying problem-solving skills to create innovative solutions. In literacy, we ran a persuasive writing carousel where pupils produced green screen news reports and digital posters to raise awareness about climate change. Creativity was at the heart of our learning, with drama, research, and interactive activities bringing the frozen continent to life.

The project not only deepened our understanding of the environment but also strengthened teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills. It’s been a fantastic term of discovery and innovation!
