Equality at Hengoed Primary

Hengoed Primary School is opposed to all forms of prejudice and discrimination and recognises that pupils have different needs, requirements and goals.

We are committed to equality for all regardless of age, race, disability, gender, religion or belief and sexual orientation. At our school we have a positive approach to difference and respect people of all backgrounds. Every child at our school is a valued member and are encouraged to participate in every part of school life.

Our school council play a massive in part in promoting the rights of the children.  As part of our new curriculum we have a clear focus on the rights of the child and this is promoted through the our JIGSAW scheme of work.

Peace Keepers

Peace Circles, developed by Roy Leighton, are a powerful practice designed to create a safe, respectful space where children can share, listen, and reflect together. Rooted in restorative principles, the circle fosters equality, empathy, and mutual understanding by giving every participant an equal voice. It shifts the focus from punishment to dialogue, encouraging young people to take responsibility for their actions and to repair relationships when harm has been caused.

The use of Peace Circles empowers children by teaching them that their voice matters, instilling a sense of agency and self-worth. The structured, supportive format builds confidence as children learn to articulate their feelings, listen with empathy, and engage in problem-solving as a community. By practicing these skills, pupils not only develop resilience and emotional intelligence but also gain the courage to resolve conflicts in a constructive way.

At its heart, this approach embodies restorative justice: it nurtures accountability, healing, and the rebuilding of trust, while strengthening the bonds within the school community. Peace Circles equip children with lifelong skills for respectful dialogue, collaboration, and leadership—turning everyday challenges into opportunities for growth and transformation.

We are also part of the OPERATION ENCOMPASS scheme

Operation Encompass is a police and education early information safeguarding partnership enabling schools to offer immediate support to children experiencing domestic abuse.

Operation Encompass ensures that there is a simple telephone call or notification to a school’s trained Designated Safeguarding Lead /Officer (known as key Adult) prior to the start of the next school day after an incident of police attended domestic abuse where there are children related to either of the adult parties involved.

Information is shared with a school’s Key Adult (Designated Safeguarding Lead or Officer) prior to the start of the next school day after officers have attended a domestic abuse incident. This sharing of information enables appropriate support to be given, dependent upon the needs and wishes of the child.

Children are negatively impacted by experiencing domestic abuse and without early intervention and support this negative impact can last through a child’s life course.  Domestic abuse can impact upon social, psychological, physical, emotional and behavioural outcomes with an often negative impact upon a child’s academic success. Experiencing domestic abuse has been identified as an Adverse Childhood Experience.

Operation Encompass aims, by directly connecting police and schools, to secure better outcomes for children , to enable schools to better understand the impact living with domestic abuse has upon children, to help schools to better understand  a child’s lived experience and to therefore be able to support and nurture each child , making a child’s day better and giving them a better tomorrow.

Our aim is to have Operation Encompass in every force, in every school, for every child no matter where they live. It is simply every child’s right.
